Menu Item & Modifier Selection

Overview

The Menu Item & Modifier Selection screen is where staff build the contents of a guest check. Browse categories, tap items to add them, configure modifiers, and apply global allergy or modifier notes — all from one screen. The layout is designed for fast order entry, with categories and sub-categories at the top and the full item grid below.

Prerequisites

  • A check must be open in the Check Composer.
  • Your menu must be configured and published in back office.

The screen is organized into three horizontal layers:

  1. Category row — A horizontally scrollable row at the top. Tap any category name to load its contents below.
  2. Sub-category row — Appears below the category row once a category is selected. Tap a sub-category to filter the item grid to that sub-category.
  3. Item grid — Displays all items in the selected category or sub-category. Tap an item to add it to the check.

Scroll left or right through the category and sub-category rows to see all available options.

Adding an Item to the Check

  1. Tap the category that contains the item you want to add.
  2. If sub-categories appear, tap the appropriate sub-category to narrow the list.
  3. Tap the item in the item grid.
  4. If the item has required modifiers or bundle choices, a modifier selection panel appears in the lower portion of the screen. Select the required options.
  5. Once all required selections are made, the item is added to the check.

Searching for an Item

Use search to quickly find an item without browsing categories:

  1. Tap Search ... (blue button).
  2. The Menu Search screen opens with a Search Menu... field.
  3. Type part of the item name. Results appear as you type.
  4. Tap the item in the results list to add it to the check.

Scanning a Barcode to Add an Item

If your location uses barcode-linked menu items:

  1. Tap Scan (blue button).
  2. The camera activates.
  3. Hold the product barcode in front of the camera.
  4. If the scanned barcode is linked to a menu item, the item is added to the check automatically.

Selecting Modifiers

When an item with modifiers is tapped, the modifier panel appears:

  • Tap modifier options to select them. Required modifiers must be selected before the item can be added.
  • Optional modifiers can be selected or skipped.
  • For items with bundled sub-items (combos, meals), each component is presented in sequence.

Global Modifiers and Allergy Notes

A global modifier and allergy bar is available at the bottom of the screen. Use this to attach notes that apply to the entire check or to specific items:

  • Tap the bar to open global modifier options and allergy flags.
  • Select any applicable modifiers or allergy indicators.
  • These notes are printed on the kitchen ticket alongside the order.

Troubleshooting

An item I expect to see is not in the menu

Verify the item is active and published in back office. If the item was recently added or edited, the POS may need to refresh. Navigate away from the menu screen and return, or log out and back in to pull the latest menu data.

The modifier panel is not appearing after I tap an item

If a modifier panel does not appear, the item may not have any modifiers configured. The item is added directly to the check. If modifiers are expected, a manager should verify the item's modifier group assignments in back office.

The Scan button is not reading the barcode

Ensure the camera has permission to access the iPad camera in iOS Settings. Hold the barcode flat, well-lit, and fully within the camera frame. If scanning continues to fail, add the item manually using Search ... instead.

An item was added to the check but I need to remove it

From the Check Composer, tap the item on the check and use the remove or void option. Depending on your role and whether the item has been sent to the kitchen, a manager PIN may be required.
