Menu 86
Overview
86-ing a menu item means marking it as temporarily unavailable — for example, when you run out of a dish or ingredient. When an item is 86'd, it no longer appears as an available selection during order entry on the POS, preventing staff from accidentally ringing it up. This guide covers how to mark items and modifiers as unavailable and how to restore them when they are back in stock.
Prerequisites
- You must be logged in to the POS.
- Access to the Menu section in Settings requires that your role has the appropriate permissions.
Opening the 86 Manager
- Tap the Menu (≡) icon to open the side drawer.
- Select Settings.
- On the Settings screen, tap Menu in the left sidebar.
- The 86 Manager opens, showing two options:
| Button | What it manages |
|---|---|
| Menu Items | Mark individual menu items as unavailable by category |
| Modifiers | Mark individual modifier options as unavailable by modifier group |
86-ing a Menu Item
- Tap Menu Items.
- Browse the list of menu categories.
- Tap a category to expand it and see its items and sub-categories.
- Find the item you want to mark as unavailable.
- Tap the toggle or button next to the item's name to mark it as 86'd.
The item is immediately hidden from the order entry menu on the POS.
Setting a limited quantity: If a small number of the item remains, tap the Limited quantity field next to the item and enter the remaining count. The POS will track how many have been ordered and automatically 86 the item when the count reaches zero.
Restoring a Menu Item
- Return to the same category and item in the 86 Manager.
- Tap the toggle or button again to mark the item as available.
The item immediately becomes available again on the POS order entry screen.
86-ing a Modifier
- From the 86 Manager, tap Modifiers.
- Browse the list of modifier groups.
- Find the specific modifier option you want to mark as unavailable.
- Tap the toggle next to it to 86 it.
The modifier option is hidden from the modifier selection screen during order entry.
Troubleshooting
An item I 86'd is still appearing on the POS
Changes take effect immediately for new check sessions. If a staff member already has a check open and the menu data loaded, they may need to log out and back in to see the updated item availability.
I can't find the item in the 86 Manager
Confirm you are looking in the correct category. If the item is associated with a sub-category, tap the category first and then the sub-category to find the item. If the item is still missing, it may not be active in your back office menu.
The Menu section is not visible in Settings
Your staff role may not have permission to access Menu 86. Ask a manager to verify your role settings in the back office.
