Guest-Facing Checkout
Overview
The Guest-Facing Checkout is a special payment flow designed for setups where the iPad is turned toward the guest so they can interact with the payment process directly. It guides the guest through tip selection, optional donation, survey questions, and receipt preference — all on screen without staff involvement.
Prerequisites
- A card payment device must be assigned to the POS tablet and set to Guest Facing checkout type in back office (Settings → Mobile Devices).
- The guest-facing checkout flow is activated based on your device's checkout type setting.
How Guest-Facing Checkout Works
When a card payment is initiated on a device configured for Guest Facing mode, the POS displays a guest-facing interface. The guest interacts with the screen directly.
Step 1 — Tip Selection
The guest is presented with tip selection options:
- Tap a preset tip percentage button to select that tip amount.
- Tap Custom Tip to enter a specific dollar amount using the on-screen keypad.
- Tap No Tip to proceed without adding a tip.
Step 2 — Donation (if enabled)
If your restaurant has a donation option configured, the guest is asked whether they would like to round up or contribute a small amount to the designated cause.
- Tap Yes to add the donation amount.
- Tap No to skip.
Step 3 — Survey (if enabled)
If a guest satisfaction survey is configured for your location, survey question(s) appear for the guest to respond to.
- Tap the appropriate response option(s) on screen.
Step 4 — Card Payment
After selections are made, the card terminal processes the payment. The guest taps, inserts, or swipes their card as prompted by the terminal.
Step 5 — Receipt Preference
Once payment is approved, the screen displays "Thank You!" and offers the guest three receipt options:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Printed Receipt | Sends a receipt to the connected receipt printer |
| Emailed Receipt | Prompts the guest to enter their email address to receive a digital receipt |
| No Receipt | Dismisses the checkout screen without printing or emailing |
If Emailed Receipt is selected, a text field appears for the guest to type their email address, and the receipt is sent electronically.
Returning to Staff Mode
After the guest makes their receipt selection, the POS returns to the staff-facing view automatically.
Troubleshooting
Tip screen is not appearing
Tip prompts appear based on your device's checkout configuration. If tips should appear but the screen is skipping directly to payment, confirm the Guest Facing checkout type is selected for this tablet in back office under Settings → Mobile Devices.
"Emailed Receipt" is not sending
Confirm the guest's email address was entered correctly. If the email still does not arrive after a few minutes, check the spam/junk folder. Email delivery also requires the POS to have an active internet connection at the time of selection.
The guest-facing flow is appearing when it should not
Confirm the Checkout Type on this tablet in back office is set correctly. If the device should use Standard checkout, update the setting under Settings → Mobile Devices.
