Closing a Check

Overview

Closing a check finalizes the transaction for a table or order. A check can only be closed once the full balance has been paid. Closing removes the check from your active session and marks it as complete in your reporting.

Prerequisites

  • The check must have a full payment applied — the Amount Due must be $0.00 or fully covered before closing.
  • You must have the check open on your screen.

How to Close a Check

  1. Open the check you want to close.
  2. Tap the Pay button to reach the payment screen (if payment has not yet been taken).
  3. After payment is applied and the full balance is covered, the Close Check option becomes available.
  4. The Close Check confirmation screen appears, showing:
    • Check Total: — the full pre-tax and post-tax total for the check
    • Amount Due: — the remaining balance (should show $0.00 for a fully paid check)
  5. Tap Close Check to finalize.

The check is closed, removed from the active check list, and recorded in your sales reports.

Adjusting Before Closing

If you need to make changes before finalizing:

  1. On the Close Check screen, tap Adjust instead of Close Check.
  2. You are taken back to the payment or check view to make corrections (such as editing a tip or removing a payment).
  3. Return to the Close Check screen when ready.

Canceling

  • Tap Cancel on the Close Check screen to return to the check without closing it. All items and payments remain unchanged.

Troubleshooting

Close Check button is not appearing

The check still has an outstanding balance. Apply payment for the full amount due before the option to close becomes available.

"You cannot close a check with an outstanding balance"

One or more items on the check have not been fully paid. Review the payment list and confirm the full check total is covered.

A closed check needs to be modified

Once a check is closed, items and payments cannot be changed. If an error was made, contact a manager — some adjustments (such as tip corrections on certain payment types) may be possible through back office.
