Ohio POS system — for Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and beyond

Ohio's restaurant scene runs across three distinct major metros — Cleveland's pierogi-and-Hungarian heritage, Columbus's emerging food capital status, and Cincinnati's famously specific chili tradition. Katalyst OS handles county-by-county sales tax variation, Buckeyes/Browns/Bengals game-day volume, and the ethnic-restaurant modifier complexity Ohio operators run.

Ohio is genuinely three restaurant economies stacked into one state. Cleveland runs the ethnic European heritage market — pierogies, paczki, kielbasa, Hungarian goulash, Italian-American on the West Side. Columbus has emerged as the state's food capital with the German Village, Short North, and Easton scenes anchoring a growing fine-dining and concept-driven market. Cincinnati holds the chili tradition (Skyline, Gold Star, and dozens of independents serving 3-way / 4-way / 5-way builds that confuse out-of-state visitors).

Ohio's tax structure runs 5.75% state sales tax plus county/transit district add-ons that range 0.25%–2.25% by location. Total effective rate runs 5.75%–8% by county — Cuyahoga (Cleveland) hits 8%, Franklin (Columbus) 7.5%, Hamilton (Cincinnati) 7.8%. Food for off-premises consumption is generally exempt from sales tax; dine-in is taxed. Katalyst applies the right rate at each location automatically.

Labor compliance in Ohio follows federal standards — tipped minimum at $5.35/hr cash plus tips bringing total to at least $10.70/hr (state minimum, higher than federal). No statewide paid sick leave law (a Cincinnati ordinance was challenged and stayed). No statewide Fair Workweek scheduling requirements. Tip pooling follows federal DOL rules cleanly.

What’s different here

Ohio operating particulars

Restaurant scenes, seasonal patterns, and tax regimes specific to Ohio that generic POS systems handle poorly. Here’s how Katalyst is set up for them out of the box.

Cincinnati chili modifier complexity

3-way (chili + spaghetti + cheese), 4-way (add onions OR beans), 5-way (everything), plus cheese coneys, oyster crackers on the side, hot sauce / mild. Cincinnati chili's modifier groups are deeper than they look — Katalyst handles the build customisation that Skyline / Gold Star / Camp Washington veterans expect.

Cleveland ethnic restaurant heritage

West Side pierogi houses, Tremont Polish + Hungarian, Little Italy, Slavic Village — Cleveland's ethnic restaurant scene runs concepts that legacy POS systems can't categorise properly. Custom menu structures, ethnic-specific modifier groups, and multi-generational customer database handling all built in.

Buckeyes/Browns/Bengals game-day volume

Ohio State Saturdays in Columbus, Browns Sundays in Cleveland, Bengals Sundays in Cincinnati — Ohio sports-bar operations spike 4–6× on game days. Quick-pick layout, repeat-order for regulars, and group-tab handling for fan parties built for this pattern.

Columbus emerging food capital

German Village, Short North, Easton, and the Brewery District anchor Columbus's growing food-driven economy. Concept-driven restaurants, food halls, and the Ohio State student/staff dining volume run cleanly on Katalyst's multi-revenue-centre setup.

  • 24,000+ restaurant establishments

BLS QCEW data — 3 distinct major metros

  • Sales tax 5.75% state + local 0.25–2.25%

    Cuyahoga 8%, Franklin 7.5%, Hamilton 7.8%

  • Ohio tip avg ≈18–19%

Columbus + Cincinnati slightly higher than Cleveland

Local questions

Common questions from Ohio operators

Does Katalyst handle Ohio's county-by-county sales tax variation?

Yes. Katalyst applies the 5.75% Ohio state sales tax plus the appropriate county/transit district add-on for each location: 2.25% in Cuyahoga (Cleveland) for 8% total, 1.75% in Franklin (Columbus) for 7.5%, 2.05% in Hamilton (Cincinnati) for 7.8%. Multi-location operators see the right rate at each address automatically.

Can Katalyst handle Cincinnati chili-house modifier complexity?

Yes. 3-way / 4-way / 5-way build modifiers, cheese coneys, oyster crackers side, hot/mild — the Cincinnati chili workflow runs cleanly on Katalyst's modifier shortcuts. One-tap selection of common combinations plus per-modifier customisation when needed.

How does Katalyst handle Ohio State / Browns / Bengals game-day surges?

Quick-pick layout for high-frequency items, repeat-order shortcuts for regulars, group-tab handling for fan parties, and end-of-shift reconciliation tools built for the 4–6× volume spikes Ohio sports bars see on game days. Tip-out by bartender + server cleanly broken out in close-out reports.

Will Katalyst work for Columbus food halls and multi-concept operations?

Yes. Food halls and multi-concept venues run as separate revenue centres on one Katalyst account, with each concept (pizza, taqueria, ramen, dessert) having its own menu, modifiers, and reporting while sharing a single customer database and unified end-of-night reconciliation.

Event venues

POS systems help manage reservations and assign rooms to guests. They’re also useful for tracking food and cleaning supplies inventory and handling billing for room charges, meals, and add-on services.

FAQ

POS system FAQ

How does a POS system work?

A point of sale (POS) system processes payments, updates inventory, and tracks sales and customer data. When a customer places an order, an employee enters the items on the POS. The system calculates the cost and processes the payment — cash, card, or mobile. Katalyst OS automatically updates inventory by deducting items sold, keeping stock counts accurate in real time. Every transaction is recorded, so you can pull sales and trend reports as often as you like.

What is a POS system example?

Katalyst OS is an example of an all-inclusive POS. We provide standard POS services such as payment processing, online ordering, and table management — and we don’t stop there. Unlike most POS systems on the market, our solution includes 24/7 support, a branded mobile app, gift card and loyalty programs, and reservations, all in one platform.

How does POS payment work?

Katalyst OS handles the entire payment process end-to-end. Once a server enters the items being purchased, the POS calculates the total — applying tax and discounts automatically. Customers can tap their phone, swipe a card, or pay in cash. Once payment is approved (usually a few seconds), the POS prints a receipt or sends one to the guest’s email. Sale records and inventory levels update automatically to reflect the transaction.
