POS system Illinois

Illinois POS system — built for Chicago and Chicagoland

Illinois restaurants run from Chicago deep-dish pizzerias to Italian beef stands to West Loop fine dining. Katalyst OS handles Chicago's stacked tax structure (state + county + city + amusement), Fair Workweek scheduling compliance, and the multi-municipality operations Chicagoland groups face.

Illinois restaurant operations are dominated by Chicago and the surrounding Chicagoland metro. Chicago itself runs everything from the deep-dish pizza tradition (Lou Malnati's, Pequod's, Giordano's defining a regional category) to the Italian beef stands that have become a national obsession, to the West Loop / Fulton Market fine dining scene that's now one of the strongest in the country. Outside Chicago, downstate Illinois runs college-town markets (Champaign-Urbana for U of Illinois, Bloomington-Normal for ISU) and the steady mid-Illinois economy.

Chicago's tax structure is one of the most layered in the country: 6.25% Illinois state sales tax + 1.25% Cook County home rule + 1.25% Chicago home rule + Chicago restaurant tax 0.5% + amusement tax 9% on dining out (the amusement tax is what makes Chicago famous for high effective restaurant taxation). Effective rate on a dine-in meal in Chicago can hit 11.25–11.5% once everything stacks. Katalyst applies and reports each layer separately for clean Illinois Department of Revenue + Chicago Department of Finance filings.

Illinois labor compliance is led by Chicago's Fair Workweek ordinance, which requires advance scheduling notice for businesses with 250+ employees in the food service, hospitality, manufacturing, and retail sectors. Tipped minimum wage in Chicago is being phased out by 2028 (currently $11.20/hr tipped + $15.80/hr non-tipped). Katalyst handles the schedule notice tracking and the Chicago-specific predictability pay rules.

What’s different here

Illinois operating particulars

Restaurant scenes, seasonal patterns, and tax regimes specific to Illinois that generic POS systems handle poorly. Here’s how Katalyst is set up for them out of the box.

Chicago deep-dish pizza tradition

Deep-dish modifier groups are some of the deepest in any restaurant category — crust type, sauce on top or under, single vs double-layer cheese, every topping in three sections. Katalyst's modifier shortcut layout handles a fully customised deep-dish in under five taps.

Chicago Restaurant Week prix-fixe

Chicago Restaurant Week runs twice yearly (Feb and Sept), with 400+ restaurants offering 3-course prix-fixe lunch ($25) and dinner ($39–$55). Katalyst's prix-fixe engine + reservation tools let you build the Restaurant Week menu once and toggle in/out of mode without rebuilding the normal menu.

Chicago amusement tax + restaurant tax

Chicago's 9% amusement tax on dining out + 0.5% restaurant tax stack on top of state and county sales tax. Each line tracks separately on receipts and reports for clean filings with the City of Chicago Department of Finance.

Chicagoland multi-municipality operations

Restaurant groups operating in Chicago + suburbs (Naperville, Schaumburg, Evanston, Oak Park) face different tax rates at each municipality. Katalyst applies the right rate at each address automatically, with combined-group reporting that consolidates across the corporate entity.

  • 24,000+ restaurant establishments

BLS QCEW data — Chicago ≈8,000 alone

  • Chicago combined tax 11.25–11.5%

state + county + city + restaurant + amusement layers

  • Chicago tip avg ≈20%

    downstate IL ≈18%, suburb ≈19%

Local questions

Common questions from Illinois operators

Does Katalyst handle Chicago's stacked restaurant tax structure?

Yes. Katalyst applies and tracks each layer separately: 6.25% IL state sales tax + 1.25% Cook County + 1.25% Chicago home rule + 0.5% Chicago restaurant tax + 9% Chicago amusement tax on dining out. Reports break out each component for clean Illinois DOR + Chicago Department of Finance filings.

How does Katalyst handle Chicago Fair Workweek scheduling?

Schedule notice tracking with the 14-day advance requirement, predictability pay calculations when last-minute changes happen, and the audit trail Chicago's Office of Labor Standards Enforcement requires. Built for restaurants with 250+ employees who fall under the ordinance.

Can Katalyst handle Chicago Restaurant Week prix-fixe operations?

Yes. The prix-fixe engine lets you build the Restaurant Week 3-course menu once with the $25 lunch / $39–$55 dinner price points, then toggle in and out of Restaurant Week mode without rebuilding your standard menu. Reservation tools handle the surge volume that Restaurant Week always brings.

Will Katalyst work across Chicago plus suburbs (Naperville, Schaumburg, Evanston)?

Yes. Each location applies its own tax rate (Chicago city + amusement tax differs from Cook County suburbs which differs from DuPage County), with combined-group reporting that consolidates across the corporate entity. Common Chicagoland pattern is a Chicago flagship plus 2–4 suburban locations on one Katalyst account.

FAQ

POS system FAQ

How does a POS system work?

A point of sale (POS) system processes payments, updates inventory, and tracks sales and customer data. When a customer places an order, an employee enters the items on the POS. The system calculates the cost and processes the payment — cash, card, or mobile. Katalyst OS automatically updates inventory by deducting items sold, keeping stock counts accurate in real time. Every transaction is recorded, so you can pull sales and trend reports as often as you like.

What is a POS system example?

Katalyst OS is an example of an all-inclusive POS. We provide standard POS services such as payment processing, online ordering, and table management — and we don’t stop there. Unlike most POS systems on the market, our solution includes 24/7 support, a branded mobile app, gift card and loyalty programs, and reservations, all in one platform.

How does POS payment work?

Katalyst OS handles the entire payment process end-to-end. Once a server enters the items being purchased, the POS calculates the total — applying tax and discounts automatically. Customers can tap their phone, swipe a card, or pay in cash. Once payment is approved (usually a few seconds), the POS prints a receipt or sends one to the guest’s email. Sale records and inventory levels update automatically to reflect the transaction.
