POS system Idaho

Idaho POS system — for Boise, Sun Valley, Coeur d'Alene, and beyond

Idaho's restaurant economy runs Boise's emerging food scene (with the largest Basque-American population in the US outside Spain), Sun Valley's ski-resort + Hemingway tourism economy, Coeur d'Alene's lake tourism, and the BSU + Idaho potato culture that defines the state. Katalyst OS handles Idaho's uniform 6% sales tax (among the simplest in the US — no local sales tax), the Basque-American restaurant tradition, and Sun Valley seasonal patterns.

Idaho restaurant operations cluster around three distinct economies. The Treasure Valley (Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell) anchors the state with Boise's emerging food scene plus a uniquely concentrated Basque-American community — Boise has the largest Basque population in the United States outside Spain, and restaurants like Bar Gernika and Leku Ona maintain the Basque culinary tradition (croquetas, pintxos, chorizo, txakoli wine, paella for celebration meals). Sun Valley and Ketchum anchor the resort + outdoor recreation + Hemingway-tourism economy in the Wood River Valley. Coeur d'Alene runs the Idaho Panhandle lake-tourism economy. Plus BSU football, University of Idaho (Moscow), and the broader Idaho potato + ranching cultural identity.

Idaho sales tax: 6% uniform statewide with no county or local sales tax — among the simplest restaurant tax administrations in the US, similar to Michigan and Kentucky. Multi-location operators see the same 6% rate at every Idaho address. Restaurants pay 6% on prepared food; groceries exempt. Katalyst handles ID's simplicity by default with no per-location configuration needed.

Idaho labor follows federal: $7.25/hr minimum (ID matches), $3.35/hr tipped + tips making up to $7.25. No state paid sick leave. No state Fair Workweek scheduling. Tip pooling follows federal DOL rules. Compliance environment among the simpler in the country, matching the tax simplicity.

What’s different here

Idaho operating particulars

Restaurant scenes, seasonal patterns, and tax regimes specific to Idaho that generic POS systems handle poorly. Here’s how Katalyst is set up for them out of the box.

Boise Basque-American heritage

Boise has the largest Basque-American population in the US outside Spain (the Basque Block downtown anchors the community). Bar Gernika, Leku Ona, and Epi's Basque Restaurant maintain the tradition — croquetas, pintxos, chorizo, txakoli pour-from-height service, paella for celebration meals. Modifier groups for traditional Basque preparations + the cultural-event surge for Jaialdi (Basque festival every 5 years, ~30K attendees over 5 days).

Sun Valley ski-resort + Hemingway tourism

Sun Valley + Ketchum + Hailey run a ski-resort December–April season plus year-round Hemingway-Pulitzer literary tourism (Hemingway lived and is buried in Ketchum). On-mountain lodge dining, village-base operations, after-ski bar workflow, and the celebrity-second-home demographic that drives Sun Valley dining all handled.

Coeur d'Alene lake-tourism economy

Coeur d'Alene Resort, Hayden Lake, and the broader Idaho Panhandle lake tourism drive Memorial Day–Labor Day surge. Waterfront restaurants, boating-tourist patterns, and the seasonal staffing rotation Panhandle operators run between peak season and winter.

Idaho uniform 6% sales tax

Idaho has no county or local sales tax — uniform 6% statewide on prepared food. Multi-location operators see the same rate at Boise, Sun Valley, Coeur d'Alene, and every other Idaho address. Katalyst handles ID's simplicity with no per-location configuration needed.

  • 6,000+ restaurant establishments

BLS QCEW data — Treasure Valley + Sun Valley + Coeur d'Alene

  • Uniform 6% statewide sales tax

no county or local add-ons — among simplest in US

  • Sun Valley tip avg ≈20%

rest of Idaho ≈18%; Hemingway literary tourism + ski season skews Sun Valley higher

Local questions

Common questions from Idaho operators

Does Katalyst handle Idaho's uniform 6% sales tax?

Yes — and Idaho is among the simplest US states for restaurant tax administration. No county or local sales tax means multi-location operators see the same 6% rate at every Idaho address (Boise, Sun Valley, Coeur d'Alene, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls all identical). Katalyst handles ID's simplicity by default with no per-location configuration needed.

Can Katalyst handle Boise Basque-American restaurant operations?

Yes. Modifier groups for traditional Basque preparations (croquetas, pintxos varieties, chorizo styles, paella for groups, txakoli pour-from-height service), Basque festival surge handling (Jaialdi every 5 years, plus annual San Inazio events), and the cultural-community-specific reservation patterns Boise's Basque restaurants run during community celebrations all handled.

How does Katalyst handle Sun Valley ski-resort operations?

On-mountain lodge dining (ski-in/ski-out), village-base operations, after-ski bar workflow, the celebrity-second-home demographic's expense-account patterns, and the December–April ski season + year-round Hemingway-Pulitzer literary tourism volume all handled. Seasonal staffing rotation for the December–April peak vs shoulder season.

Will Katalyst work for Coeur d'Alene lake-tourism restaurants?

Yes. Memorial Day–Labor Day surge handling for Panhandle waterfront restaurants, seasonal staffing rotation between peak season and winter shoulder, walk-up workflows for waterfront tourist takeout, and the boating-tourist patterns that distinguish Coeur d'Alene from other Idaho markets.

FAQ

POS system FAQ

How does a POS system work?

A point of sale (POS) system processes payments, updates inventory, and tracks sales and customer data. When a customer places an order, an employee enters the items on the POS. The system calculates the cost and processes the payment — cash, card, or mobile. Katalyst OS automatically updates inventory by deducting items sold, keeping stock counts accurate in real time. Every transaction is recorded, so you can pull sales and trend reports as often as you like.

What is a POS system example?

Katalyst OS is an example of an all-inclusive POS. We provide standard POS services such as payment processing, online ordering, and table management — and we don’t stop there. Unlike most POS systems on the market, our solution includes 24/7 support, a branded mobile app, gift card and loyalty programs, and reservations, all in one platform.

How does POS payment work?

Katalyst OS handles the entire payment process end-to-end. Once a server enters the items being purchased, the POS calculates the total — applying tax and discounts automatically. Customers can tap their phone, swipe a card, or pay in cash. Once payment is approved (usually a few seconds), the POS prints a receipt or sends one to the guest’s email. Sale records and inventory levels update automatically to reflect the transaction.
