New Jersey POS system — for Jersey City, the Shore, and beyond

New Jersey runs the densest diner culture in the country, the Jersey Shore summer economy, NYC commuter-belt dining in Hudson and Bergen counties, and the Atlantic City casino-resort market. New Jersey hosts the densest diner culture in the United States — more diners per capita than any other state, with 24-hour service, breakfast-all-day, and multi-page laminated menus that have defined the NJ dining identity since the 1950s. Beyond diners, NJ runs the Jersey Shore tourist economy (Memorial Day through Labor Day spike + boardwalk operations), Hudson County's NYC commuter-belt dining (Jersey City and Hoboken pricing approaches Manhattan), Bergen County's affluent suburban scene, and Atlantic City's casino-resort hospitality economy.

New Jersey's sales tax is 6.625% statewide (no county or local variation outside Atlantic City). Atlantic City has a separate Luxury Tax structure that adds 12.875% combined on certain boardwalk and casino-adjacent businesses. Most prepared food is taxed at the standard 6.625% rate; certain qualifying food (groceries) is exempt but doesn't apply to restaurants. Katalyst handles standard NJ rates by default and the AC Luxury Tax separately for properties in that zone.

NJ labor compliance is among the stricter in the country: state minimum wage is $15.13/hr (2026), tipped minimum is $5.62/hr cash + tips making up to $15.13/hr total. NJ has strict DOL enforcement around tip pooling and meal-break tracking. Earned sick leave is mandatory statewide (1 hour earned per 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours/year). Katalyst's labor module handles NJ's minimum wage, tip credit, and sick leave accrual cleanly.

What’s different here

New Jersey operating particulars

Restaurant scenes, seasonal patterns, and tax regimes specific to New Jersey that generic POS systems handle poorly. Here’s how Katalyst is set up for them out of the box.

24-hour diner workflow

Multi-page menus (often 8–12 pages laminated), breakfast-all-day, late-night/overnight service, and the regulars who order "the usual" without speaking. Katalyst's quick-pick layout, repeat-order shortcuts, and 24/7 transaction handling are built for the diner-service pattern.

Pork roll vs Taylor ham regional menu

North Jersey calls it Taylor ham; South Jersey calls it pork roll. Same product, different menu label. Katalyst's regional menu management lets multi-location operators serve the right naming convention at each location — a small detail that matters more to NJ regulars than out-of-state visitors realise.

Jersey Shore seasonal surge

Shore restaurants see 5–10× volume between off-season and Memorial Day–Labor Day peak. Katalyst's seasonal staffing rotation, capacity throttling for boardwalk volume, and menu-management tools handle the surge — many Shore operators hibernate in winter and run heavy seasonal staffing.

Hudson County NYC commuter-belt

Jersey City and Hoboken restaurants compete with Manhattan dining quality at NJ tax rates. NYC-trained chefs, NYC commuter customers, NJ operating cost basis. Katalyst's fine-dining feature set (course pacing, reservation depth, modifier complexity) matches what NYC operators expect.

Local questions

Common questions from New Jersey operators

Does Katalyst handle New Jersey's 6.625% sales tax and Atlantic City Luxury Tax?

Yes. Standard NJ sales tax of 6.625% applies statewide by default with no county or local variation. Atlantic City properties subject to the Luxury Tax structure are handled separately — Katalyst can apply the additional luxury-tax layer for boardwalk and casino-adjacent restaurants that qualify.

Will Katalyst support NJ's earned sick leave compliance?

Yes. NJ's mandatory earned sick leave (1 hour earned per 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours/year) is tracked at the employee level. Katalyst's labor module also handles the NJ tipped minimum wage ($5.62/hr cash + tips making up to $15.13/hr total) and the NJ DOL tip-pool transparency requirements.

Can Katalyst handle 24-hour diner workflows?

Yes. Multi-page menu management, quick-pick layouts for high-frequency items, repeat-order shortcuts for regulars, daypart-specific pricing (breakfast-all-day, late-night menu), and 24/7 transaction handling all built in. The reporting layer handles overnight-shift reconciliation that most POS systems struggle with.

Will Katalyst work for Jersey Shore boardwalk seasonal operations?

Yes. Seasonal staffing rotation, capacity throttling for boardwalk surges, walk-up window workflows, and the rotating menu support that Shore operators need to flip between full season (Memorial Day–Labor Day) and winter limited/closed mode. Common pattern: 7-day-week summer ops, weekends-only May/Sep, closed Nov–Mar.

FAQ

POS system FAQ

How does a POS system work?

A point of sale (POS) system processes payments, updates inventory, and tracks sales and customer data. When a customer places an order, an employee enters the items on the POS. The system calculates the cost and processes the payment — cash, card, or mobile. Katalyst OS automatically updates inventory by deducting items sold, keeping stock counts accurate in real time. Every transaction is recorded, so you can pull sales and trend reports as often as you like.

What is a POS system example?

Katalyst OS is an example of an all-inclusive POS. We provide standard POS services such as payment processing, online ordering, and table management — and we don’t stop there. Unlike most POS systems on the market, our solution includes 24/7 support, a branded mobile app, gift card and loyalty programs, and reservations, all in one platform.

How does POS payment work?

Katalyst OS handles the entire payment process end-to-end. Once a server enters the items being purchased, the POS calculates the total — applying tax and discounts automatically. Customers can tap their phone, swipe a card, or pay in cash. Once payment is approved (usually a few seconds), the POS prints a receipt or sends one to the guest’s email. Sale records and inventory levels update automatically to reflect the transaction.
