Florida POS system — for Miami, Orlando, and the coast

Florida's restaurant scene is built on tourism — Miami nightlife, Orlando theme park volume, Tampa Bay, the Keys. Katalyst OS handles tourist-volume operations, Cuban and Latin concepts, bilingual receipts, and the seasonal staffing patterns that define Florida hospitality.

Florida restaurant operations are uniquely seasonal and tourist-driven. Miami's nightlife scene runs late — South Beach clubs and Wynwood late-night kitchens are still seating at 1am — and bottle service makes up a meaningful chunk of revenue at the venues that compete. Orlando is dominated by the theme-park-driven tourist economy where International Drive restaurants see 10× volume swings between off-peak and Spring Break. Tampa Bay anchors the west coast, and the Keys run on winter snowbird traffic with a hurricane-season slowdown that operators plan staffing around.

Florida tax setup is straightforward: 6% state sales tax plus discretionary local taxes that run 0.5%–2% (Miami-Dade adds 1%, Orange County 0.5%, Pinellas County 1%). Florida has no state income tax, which simplifies tip distribution and frees operator capital. Hot prepared food and dine-in are taxed; there's no specific alcohol-only tax beyond standard sales tax.

Florida's seasonal staffing pattern shapes the entire operational year: snowbird traffic peaks November–April, summer slow season runs June–August, hurricane season (June–November) periodically forces multi-day closures. Katalyst supports rotating menus per season, scheduling that flexes to volume, and emergency-mode operations when a storm hits.

What’s different here

Florida operating particulars

Restaurant scenes, seasonal patterns, and tax regimes specific to Florida that generic POS systems handle poorly. Here’s how Katalyst is set up for them out of the box.

Miami nightlife and bottle service

South Beach clubs and Wynwood late-night kitchens commonly handle 30–40% of revenue through bottle service. Katalyst's tab and bottle-service workflow handles pre-auth on the card, multi-bottle add-ons, and the bartender-server attribution that determines tip-out.

Orlando theme-park tourist volume

International Drive restaurants see 10× swings between off-peak and Spring Break / holiday weeks. Katalyst's daypart-specific pricing, multi-language receipts (English/Spanish/Portuguese), and tourist tip-prompt calibration handle the volume cleanly.

Cuban / Latin concept depth

Hialeah cafeterias, Miami sandwich shops, Tampa Cuban-fusion — Latin restaurant operations have specific workflow needs (cafeteria-style ordering, bilingual receipts, café-cubano speed prep). Native Spanish-language POS option and bilingual receipt printing built in.

Hurricane-season operations

Cloud POS with offline-first transaction recording means service continues if a storm takes out connectivity. When the operator needs to close, Katalyst handles emergency mode: lock the storefront, freeze online orders, surface insurance-ready closure reports.

Local questions

Common questions from Florida operators

Does Katalyst handle Florida's local discretionary sales tax (Miami-Dade, Orange, etc.)?

Yes. Katalyst applies the 6% Florida state sales tax plus the local discretionary tax for each location automatically — 1% in Miami-Dade, 0.5% in Orange County, 1% in Pinellas, varying elsewhere. State and local lines track separately for clean Department of Revenue filings.

Does Katalyst support bilingual (English/Spanish) receipts and menus?

Yes. Spanish-language POS interface and bilingual receipt printing are built in — critical for Miami, Hialeah, Orlando International Drive, and Tampa Cuban-concept restaurants. Menu items can carry both English and Spanish descriptions, with receipts rendering in the customer's preferred language.

How does Katalyst handle Miami bottle service workflow?

Pre-auth hold on the card when the tab opens, multi-bottle add-on with bartender-server attribution for tip-out, bottle-list flagging at end of shift, and high-value tab security flags. The workflow Miami nightlife operators actually run, not the dine-in template most POS systems force.

What happens to my Katalyst POS during a hurricane?

Cloud POS with offline-first transaction recording continues service if connectivity drops. When you decide to close, Katalyst's emergency mode locks the storefront, freezes online orders, holds pending catering bookings, and surfaces closure reports for insurance and grant programs. Recovery is one-tap when you reopen.

Types of POS systems in Florida

POS systems aren’t one-size-fits-all. Katalyst is tuned for the kinds of operators who actually use it day to day.

Coffee shops, convenience stores, and retail of all sizes use POS systems to process payments, run loyalty programs, and update menus and pricing in real time.

Restaurants

From fine dining to fast food, every restaurant uses a POS system. Operators rely on POS software because it makes their day easier — taking orders, managing tables and reservations, and processing payments efficiently.

Food trucks

POS systems let food trucks ditch the cash register and take orders and process payments on the go. They also generate sales reports that help operators understand peak times and sales trends.

Bars

A bar POS supports order accuracy, inventory tracking, and tab management. Katalyst OS also generates detailed reports on sales and customer behaviour, helping bar owners make informed decisions.

Event venues

Small and large event venues use POS systems as mobile cash registers for ticketing, food and drink sales, and merchandise.

Bed and breakfasts

POS systems help manage reservations and assign rooms to guests. They’re also useful for tracking food and cleaning supplies inventory and handling billing for room charges, meals, and add-on services.

Catering businesses

POS systems support catering with everything from invoicing to inventory control, and store past clients’ information and preferences for future marketing.

FAQ

POS system FAQ

How does a POS system work?

A point of sale (POS) system processes payments, updates inventory, and tracks sales and customer data. When a customer places an order, an employee enters the items on the POS. The system calculates the cost and processes the payment — cash, card, or mobile. Katalyst OS automatically updates inventory by deducting items sold, keeping stock counts accurate in real time. Every transaction is recorded, so you can pull sales and trend reports as often as you like.

What is a POS system example?

Katalyst OS is an example of an all-inclusive POS. We provide standard POS services such as payment processing, online ordering, and table management — and we don’t stop there. Unlike most POS systems on the market, our solution includes 24/7 support, a branded mobile app, gift card and loyalty programs, and reservations, all in one platform.

How does POS payment work?

Katalyst OS handles the entire payment process end-to-end. Once a server enters the items being purchased, the POS calculates the total — applying tax and discounts automatically. Customers can tap their phone, swipe a card, or pay in cash. Once payment is approved (usually a few seconds), the POS prints a receipt or sends one to the guest’s email. Sale records and inventory levels update automatically to reflect the transaction.
